Xavier University Centennial Homecoming Celebrates 100 Years of HBCU Excellence

Grammy-Award Winning Gospel Artist Yolanda Adams and R&B Singer and Songwriter Mariah “the Scientist” Buckles joined local DJs to entertain thousands of alumni and current students as Xavier University of Louisiana. They took over the streets around Drexel Drive to celebrate the 100th Year as one of three Historically Black Universities in New Orleans. “It’s good to see people who look like you and come from a similar cultural background. HBCUs are my favorite place to perform,” said Buckles as she performed as the headliner for the Student Homecoming Concert on November 4th.“Education is really important but make sure you have some fun too,” said Buckles who is currently on an HBCU tour.
Yolanda Adams capped a week full of centennial activities that included an Open Mic with alumni, presentations from the Divine Nine Greek Sororities and Fraternities, a golf tournament fundraiser, alumni mentor mixers and an author showcase.“It’s amazing to know that we have 100 more years to keep going and I’m so grateful and thankful to serve you on today and remind you of how much power you have to remind you that God is not finish with you yet no matter how old you think you are,” Adams said.

“If you are still breathing, God’s not finished with you yet,” Adams told the audience at the Gospel Concert Extravaganza on November 9th at the Convocation Center.

Alumni said despite the travel woes, they wanted to come back home to celebrate with current students at a university that created the foundation of who they could be become.

“Stepping foot on campus with people that had the same experiences at the same place, reminds me how connected we are,” said Deandre Dumas, a Senior Biology/Pre-Medicine Major from St. James Parish, Louisiana who is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Inc. Fraternity.
