The long-awaited Obama Presidential Center officially opened its doors with a Four-Day Celebration that brought together former presidents, world-renowned entertainers, community leaders, and thousands of visitors to Chicago’s South Side.

The festivities began on June 18th with an invitation-only Grand Opening Dedication Ceremony attended by former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama. Joining them on stage were former Presidents Joe Biden, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton, along with former first ladies and members of the Obama family, including daughters Malia and Sasha Obama.

The event attracted an impressive list of guests from the worlds of entertainment, sports, and business, including Oprah Winfrey, Stephen Colbert, David Letterman, Dwyane Wade, George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Tyler Perry, and Tom Hanks.

One of the ceremony’s most memorable moments came when Michelle Obama delivered an emotional speech that moved her husband to tears. President Obama spoke about the vision behind the center, describing it as more than a Presidential Library.

“We wanted the center to be a vibrant, living celebration of community,” Obama said. “It’s in those moments that we’re reminded of our common humanity and strengthen the bonds of trust that not only make our lives richer, but make our democracy stronger.”

The celebration also featured performances by some of the biggest names in music. Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, Bono, Christina Aguilera, Common, Bruce Springsteen, and Stevie Wonder were among the artists who took the stage to commemorate the historic occasion.

The festivities continued the following day when President and Mrs. Obama surprised the center’s first 100 visitors. Guests, who traveled from across the country, had the opportunity to meet the former first couple, shake hands, and share personal conversations with them.

The Obamas also spent time with local children at the campus’ new Chicago Public Library Branch, where they read the beloved children’s book Where the Wild Things Are.

Throughout the weekend, thousands of people visited the new campus, participating in free community events featuring music, dancing, art, and cultural programming. The opening celebration reflected the center’s mission of community engagement, education, and civic participation.

Located at 6001 S. Stony Island Avenue in Jackson Park, the Obama Presidential Center now stands as a landmark on Chicago’s South Side and a symbol of the Obamas’ enduring connection to the city where their political journey began.

The center is now open to the public. While tickets are required, Illinois residents receive free admission on Tuesdays, and children two years old and younger are admitted free year-round.
