Celebrating the Life of Jerome “Big Duck” Smith

In New Orleans, we celebrate our heroes with music, memories, laughter, tears, and the unmistakable Rhythm of a City that never forgets those who gave their lives in service to others. That spirit filled the air as people from all walks of life came together to Celebrate Jerome “Big Duck” Smith, a Son of New Orleans, Civil Rights Icon, community mentor, and our Beloved Drum Major for Justice.

Family, friends, activists, elected officials, cultural leaders, and members of the community gathered to honor a man whose footsteps were deeply rooted in the Struggle for Freedom and whose heart always remained with the people.

Smith did more than witness history—he helped shape it. From the front lines of the Civil Rights Movement to mentoring generations of young people and preserving New Orleans’ Black Cultural Traditions, Big Duck lived his life in service.
