Saints Open 2026 Season with Fight, Promise and Who Dat Pride

Football Season is back, and across New Orleans and the Gulf South, the Who Dat Nation is once again rallying behind the Black and Gold.

The New Orleans Saints opened their 2026 season Sunday on the road against the Detroit Lions, beginning another journey filled with expectations, questions and optimism. Although New Orleans fell 31-30 in a dramatic overtime battle, the Saints showed plenty of fight after falling behind 21-0.

Quarterback Tyler Shough provided one of the biggest reasons for optimism. Entering his second NFL season and first as a Saints Team Captain, Shough overcame three turnovers and finished with 410 passing yards and three touchdowns. His late touchdown pass to Juwan Johnson helped force overtime, and he responded again after Detroit scored in the extra period, connecting with Noah Fant for an eight-yard touchdown.

Wide Receiver Chris Olave also reminded everyone why he remains one of the Saints’ most important offensive weapons. Olave finished with 10 receptions for 182 yards, providing Shough with a dynamic target and giving fans a glimpse of what the quarterback-receiver combination could accomplish this season.

Head Coach Kellen Moore made an aggressive decision after the overtime touchdown, choosing to attempt a two-point conversion and play for the victory rather than extend the game. The pass fell incomplete, but Moore explained that he did not want to give Detroit’s powerful offense another opportunity with the football.

For the Who Dat Nation, one difficult loss will not define a season. Saints Football remains deeply connected to the Culture and Spirit of New Orleans, where Sundays in the fall bring together families, neighborhoods and generations of fans.

The Black and Gold showed resilience in Week 1. Now the challenge for Shough, Olave, Moore and the rest of the Saints is turning that fight into victories.
