NOLASCA Awareness welcomed 474 participants to City Park for the 9th Annual Sickle Cell Run/Walk, bringing together families, healthcare professionals, advocates, and supporters during Sickle Cell Awareness Month.
The 2K Run/Walk raised awareness of Sickle Cell Disease while supporting individuals and
families impacted by the condition. Fundraising remains underway toward the event’s $30,000 goal, with proceeds benefiting the Sickle Cell Center of Southern Louisiana at Tulane University.
One of the day’s memorable moments came from 5-year-old Sickle Cell Warrior Titan of Team Titan Strong, who finished first in the kids category. After participating last year, Titan made a commitment to return and take first place this year, a goal he proudly accomplished.
Velma Johnson, Vice President of Nursing Operations at New Orleans East Hospital, also
addressed participants and reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to serving the Sickle Cell
Population and supporting efforts like the Annual Run/Walk.
“Seeing so many people come together for our Sickle Cell Community is a powerful reminder of why we continue this work,” said Rachelle Defillo, Event Organizer and Founder of NOLASCA Awareness. “From families and healthcare partners to young warriors like Titan, every person who showed up helped bring greater awareness to Sickle Cell Disease. We are grateful for the support and look forward to continuing our fundraising efforts to help strengthen care, education, and resources for those impacted by Sickle Cell.”
NOLASCA Awareness extends its gratitude to the sponsors, healthcare partners, vendors,
volunteers and community organizations whose support helped make this year’s Run/Walk
possible.
Building on this year’s event, NOLASCA Awareness has already set the date for the 10th
Annual Sickle Cell Run/Walk, scheduled for September 11, 2027. Fundraising for the 2026 Run/Walk is still underway toward the $30,000 goal, with proceeds benefiting the Sickle Cell Center of Southern Louisiana at Tulane University.
