Barack Obama Explores Books That Shaped His Life in New Podcast

Former President Barack Obama is turning his longtime passion for Literature into a new podcast that brings together prominent writers, historians and entertainers to discuss books that influenced his worldview.

“A Great Book with Barack Obama,” a six-episode series produced through a collaboration between Audible and Higher Ground, the Media Company founded by Barack and Michelle Obama, debuted Sept. 24th. The series examines Literature through conversations about identity, power, history, memory and culture.

Each episode pairs Obama with a different guest and a book that has had a lasting influence.

Academy Award-Winning Actor Tom Hanks joins Obama to discuss Marilynne Robinson’s “Gilead,” while acclaimed Author and Journalist Ta-Nehisi Coates explores James Baldwin’s landmark work “The Fire Next Time.”

Historian Jill Lepore discusses Robert Penn Warren’s “All the King’s Men,” and former Obama national security adviser Ben Rhodes joins the former president for a conversation about John le Carré’s Cold War novel “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.”

Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Percival Everett discusses Toni Morrison’s “Song of Solomon,” while Bestselling Author Lauren Groff examines Cormac McCarthy’s “All the Pretty Horses.”

The series reflects Obama’s well-documented interest in books and storytelling. He has regularly released reading lists highlighting works that have captured his attention.
