The New Orleans Recreation Development Commission (NORD) is entering a New Chapter of Leadership with the selection of Patrice A. Bell as its new Chief Executive Officer. Her appointment comes at a critical time as the city continues working to strengthen recreational opportunities, expand youth programming, and ensure that residents across New Orleans have access to safe and welcoming community spaces.

Bell will oversee an agency with a reported $22 Million Budget and 217 employees, responsible for providing recreational activities, athletic programs, and community services to children, families, and residents throughout the city.

NORD plays an important role in the Quality of Life of New Orleans Neighborhoods, particularly in communities where affordable recreational opportunities can provide young people with positive alternatives during after-school hours, weekends, and summer months.

From organized sports and swimming programs to cultural activities and educational enrichment, the agency serves as an important resource for families seeking opportunities that promote healthy lifestyles, personal development, and community engagement.

Bell’s leadership will be especially important as New Orleans confronts ongoing challenges surrounding youth development, public safety, and equitable access to recreational facilities. Ensuring that recreation centers, playgrounds, and athletic fields are adequately maintained and accessible remains essential to the agency’s mission.

For many families, NORD Programs represent more than recreational activities. They provide opportunities for mentorship, teamwork, leadership development, and meaningful relationships between young people and positive adult role models.

The new CEO will also face the responsibility of managing limited resources while responding to the needs of neighborhoods throughout the city. Strengthening partnerships with schools, nonprofit organizations, community leaders, and local businesses could help expand programming and increase participation.

As Bell assumes leadership, residents and community stakeholders will be watching how the agency addresses longstanding concerns about facility conditions, program availability, and equitable investment across neighborhoods.

Ultimately, the success of NORD will be measured not simply by the number of programs offered, but by the opportunities created for young people and families.

With new leadership, NORD has an opportunity to strengthen its role as a cornerstone of community development and invest in the next generation of New Orleans residents.
