Music, tradition, and community pride filled the streets of New Orleans as the Perfect Gentlemen Social Aid and Pleasure Club hosted its Annual Father’s Day Second Line Parade, celebrating fathers while reinforcing a message of peace, unity, and neighborhood engagement. This year’s theme was focused on encouraging men to get their prostate checked and on mental health among African American men.
The annual procession drew residents, visitors, and second line enthusiasts who danced through the city behind the brass band, carrying on one of New Orleans’ most treasured cultural traditions. Beyond the colorful suits, hand-decorated fans, and lively music, the parade served as a tribute to the important role fathers play in strengthening families and communities.
Club President Travis Lyons said the event is about much more than entertainment. Throughout the year, Lyons has been a strong advocate for reducing violence, promoting peace, and encouraging healthier communities. He has consistently used the platform of the Perfect Gentlemen Social Aid and Pleasure Club to encourage dialogue, mentor young people and remind residents that second lines should be safe spaces where everyone can celebrate together. He has also promoted men’s health awareness, including the importance of regular prostate cancer screenings, while urging participants to leave conflict behind and embrace unity.
Founded in 1991, the Perfect Gentlemen Social Aid and Pleasure Club has built a reputation for combining New Orleans’ rich cultural traditions with meaningful community service. Through outreach efforts and annual events, the organization continues to inspire residents while preserving the city’s unique second line heritage.
As another successful Father’s Day celebration came to a close, the Perfect Gentlemen once again demonstrated that second lines are more than parades—they are expressions of culture, family, resilience, and hope that continue to unite New Orleans one step at a time.
