Xavier Ochsner College of Medicine Achieves Historic Accreditation Milestone

New Medical School Set to Welcome First Class in 2027, Expanding Opportunities for Future Physicians

Data News Weekly Staff Report

Xavier University of Louisiana has reached a Historic Milestone in its century-long commitment to education and service, as the Xavier Ochsner College of Medicine received preliminary accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), clearing the way to recruit its Inaugural Class of Medical Students in 2027.

Announced October 14, 2026, the achievement represents a significant step toward establishing the only Historically Black College or University Medical School in the Gulf South and expanding opportunities for African Americans pursuing careers in Medicine.

The medical school, established through a partnership between Xavier University and Ochsner Health in 2024, combines Xavier’s longstanding reputation for preparing African American students for medical careers with Ochsner’s expertise in healthcare delivery, research and clinical training.

“This is a historic moment for Xavier University of Louisiana, for New Orleans and for the future of medicine in this nation,” said Xavier University President Dr. Reynold Verret.

The accreditation comes as Louisiana continues confronting physician shortages and healthcare disparities. According to federal designations cited by the university, 60 of Louisiana’s 64 parishes are considered Health Professional Shortage Areas, underscoring the need for additional physicians, particularly in underserved communities.

Located in New Orleans’ growing BioDistrict, the college will emphasize medical excellence, community engagement and improving healthcare outcomes.

Dr. Leonardo Seoane, Founding Dean and President of the Xavier Ochsner College of Medicine, said the institution will prepare future physicians to address the evolving needs of patients and communities.

Beyond education, the medical school is expected to contribute significantly to the regional economy. Projections estimate $152.5 million in statewide economic impact and support for more than 1,185 jobs by 2040.

With recruitment beginning soon and the first class expected in Summer 2027, Xavier’s newest chapter represents more than an institutional achievement. It signals a major investment in diversifying the medical profession, expanding healthcare access and creating opportunities for future generations of physicians.
