LOS ANGELES — Grammy Award-Winning Singer and New Orleans native Ledisi is proving her talents extend far beyond the recording studio with a standout performance in the Ebony Repertory Theatre’s production of Ain’t Misbehavin’, the Tony Award-Winning Musical Tribute to Jazz Legend Thomas “Fats” Waller.
Currently running through June 8th at the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center, the production celebrates the music and spirit of the Harlem Renaissance. Ledisi joins an accomplished cast that includes Chester Gregory, Connie Jackson, Marty Austin Lamar, and Natalie Wachen.
Known for her soulful vocals and commanding stage presence, Ledisi said acting requires a different kind of vulnerability than singing.
“When I’m acting, I’m drawing from my own life to put into the character to make it as real as possible,” she said. “It feels more open and vulnerable.”
Ledisi credited Director Wren T. Brown, Founder and Producing Artistic Director of Ebony Repertory Theatre, for helping her trust her instincts as an actress.
“Wren trusts my instincts,” she said. “He’s made me feel that my instincts were right. To get that from a director is a beautiful thing.”
Brown praised Ledisi’s dedication and artistry, noting the discipline she brought to learning and performing the material.
“For me, Fats Waller and Ledisi both exemplify the best in our culture,” Brown said. “I consider Mr. Waller a classic, transcendent artist, and Ledisi a classic contemporary artist.”
The role marks another milestone in Ledisi’s multifaceted career. The 54-year-old singer, who won her first Grammy in 2020, has built a reputation as one of the most respected voices in R&B, soul, and jazz while also establishing herself as a stage performer.
Ledisi hopes audiences leave with a greater appreciation for Waller’s Musical Legacy.
“There is something about Fats Waller’s music,” she said. “Whether you’re familiar with him or not, come enjoy the show and be reminded of how great musical theater can be.”
