Elliot Joseph Cornelius Willard Jr. Remembered for a Life of Faith, Family and Selfless Service

Elliot Joseph Cornelius Willard Jr., a devoted man of faith, loving father, grandfather, brother, and compassionate caregiver, peacefully entered eternal rest on May 29, 2026, at his home in Columbia, South Carolina. He was 72 years old. Throughout his life, Elliot demonstrated unwavering commitment to his family, steadfast faith in God, and a quiet strength that inspired all who knew him.

Born on December 19, 1953, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Elliot, affectionately known to family and friends as “Jun,” was the eldest son of Dr. Elliot C. Willard and Mary Jane Willard. As the oldest of twelve children, he naturally assumed the role of leader and protector. He remained a source of wisdom, encouragement, and love for his brothers and sisters throughout his life, helping to strengthen the close bond that united the Willard family.

A proud graduate of St. Augustine High School, Elliot excelled as a student-athlete, competing in football and track while proudly representing the Purple Knights. During those years, he met his high school sweetheart, Terry Granger, and together they welcomed two daughters, Candice and Kristen, who brought him immeasurable joy.

Later, Elliot married Eleanora Samson, and together they welcomed their daughter, Erica. He loved each of his daughters deeply and took great pride in watching them grow into accomplished women whose lives reflected the values he instilled through love, guidance, and perseverance.

Following Hurricane Katrina, Elliot relocated to Columbia, South Carolina, where he began a new chapter of life. There he met Susie Collins, who became his devoted companion and closest friend. Their relationship was built on love, mutual respect, and unwavering support.

When Susie became seriously ill, Elliot demonstrated the depth of his character by becoming her full-time caregiver. For four years, he faithfully accompanied her to medical appointments, cared for her daily needs, and remained by her side through every challenge. His selfless devotion reflected the compassion, loyalty, and unconditional love that defined the way he lived.

Family remained the center of Elliot’s life. He treasured every opportunity to spend time with his grandchildren—Brylynn, Nylah, Alexander, Reese, and Iris—celebrating their accomplishments, encouraging their dreams, and sharing in the everyday moments that brought him the greatest happiness.

Those who knew Elliot will fondly remember his warm smile, infectious laugh, his cup of black coffee, and the familiar presence of a cigarette in hand. More importantly, they will remember a man whose generosity, humility, quiet faith, and steadfast love left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Elliot was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Dr. Elliot C. Willard and Mary Jane Willard; his brother, Hon. Walter J. Willard; and his former wife, Eleanora Samson Willard.

He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted partner, Susie Collins; his daughters, Candice, Kristen, and Erica; his cherished grandchildren; his sisters, Hon. Dr. Cynthia, Regina, Jacinta, Bernadette, Lucita, and Katherine; his brothers, Col. Christopher Willard (Ret.), Dominic, Martin, and Hon. Benedict Willard; along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, lifelong friends, and countless others whose lives were enriched by his kindness and generosity.

Though Elliot’s earthly journey has come to an end, the legacy he leaves behind is one of unwavering faith, enduring love, and selfless service. His life serves as a reminder that greatness is often found in simple acts of compassion, devotion to family, and a willingness to care for others without seeking recognition. His memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved him and in the countless lives he touched.

A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the Life of Elliot Joseph Cornelius Willard Jr. will be held at St. Raymond & St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, 2916 Paris Avenue, New Orleans, Louisiana.

Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m., followed by the Rosary at 9:30 a.m., Tributes at 10:00 a.m., and the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m.
