New Orleans Enacts Mandatory Face Covering In Public

Data News Weekly Staff Edited Report

Across the nation there is an uptick in new COVID-19 cases that is making cities and states to decide to take other actions to contain the pandemic.

Recently, New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell announced the City will enforce a mask requirement for anyone out in public throughout the City.

“We have created a Task Force to ensure compliance. It’s necessary for our safety. Many are not following guidelines. We don’t want to go backwards,” Cantrell said. “The Task Force will be going the extra mile to aid in enforcement. To make sure we are protected in our City.”

Dr. Jennifer Avegno with the New Orleans Health Department said the uptick and cases have not come from protests but from uncontrolled, unmasked gatherings. The police department says that masks will be handed out to those without them. Anyone who sees a large unmasked gathering is asked to call 311.

Cantrell stated that the City will be enforcing the mandate. “The City has and will shut down businesses who continue to be out of compliance. There will be accountability. There must be for the safety of the community,” she said.
