Rapper Cardi B and pop singer Bruno Mars headline a sizable list of Latino artists nominated for the MTV Video Music Awards. She has four nominations and he has three. There are 22 award categories.
Other candidates are Bad Bunny, Jhay Cortez, Rosalía, Black Eyed Peas, Shakira, Balvin, Tainy, Karol G, Maluma, Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato.
The 2021 MTV Video Music Awards will take place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, Sept. 12.
Cardi B’s nods include Video of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Collaboration and Best Hip Hop, all for her “WAP,” a collaboration with Megan Thee Stallion. “WAP” is one of the biggest hits of the year. Mars’ nominations are for his collaborative song “Leave the Door Open” with Anderson .Paak and Silk Sonic.
This year, the artist with the most nominations is Justin Bieber, seven, closely followed by Megan Thee Stallion, with six. More than half a dozen other performers received five nods, including Billie Eilish, BTS, Doja Cat, Drake, Lil Nas X and newcomers like Olivia Rodrigo and Giveon.
The only other Latino with multiple nominations is Bad Bunny, with two collaborations in the Best Latin category.
The so-called “Conejito Malo” competes with “Dákiti,” a joint effort with Jhay Cortez, and “Un Día (One Day),” a collaboration with Balvin, Dua Lipa and Tainy.
Vying also for the award are Billie Eilish and Rosalía with “Lo vas a olvidar,” Black Eyed Peas and Shakira with “Girl Like Me” and Karol G with “Bichota” and Maluma with “Hawái.”
Colombian nominees dominate the Latin music category — Balvin, Shakira, Karol G and Maluma — followed by Boricuas Bad Bunny, Cortez and Tainy.
